This blog is the documenting of a journey. I work for a large outsourcing company who recruited me to assist with their growth and transformation. I am charged with developing both a forward looking technology strategy and to steer massive organizational change. Currently we have over 7,000 staff with an IT Operations division of nearly 2,000. Over 20,000 servers, 11 major datacenters and a very large mainframe infrastructure. I need to design an IT organization of around a 1,000 to deliver higher service levels, at lower costs. My target is a 40-50% efficiency gain while streamlining our service delivery organization to leverage efficiencies and economies of scale. In other words, to make outsourcing viable into the 21st century. So like many, I am part architect, part strategist, part manager, part diplomat and part psychologist. Here, I will record not only our progress but the challenges, efforts and mistakes that we inevitably will make and discover along the way. The program as I begin, is scheduled to take us through to the end of 2009 but it is clear already, and so early in the program, that it will extend much further.
I have worked in IT for over 18 years and have both a technical and a managerial background.
I have degrees in both Music and Education, an MBA from Stanford graduate school of business and many industry qualifications including ITIL at the masters’ level along with various practitioners’ certifications.
My insights are the result of not only many years experience and training but also my passion for building brilliant teams around me.
I started this blog to simply capture the progress and results but also the methodologies and insights. I am fortunate to be working with some of the most experienced names in the Architectural and Strategic areas and these colleagues will also contribute invaluable data for my posts.
I have engaged the expertise and skills of the worlds leading firms to assist me so I feel that this blog will provide valuable to anyone commencing, planning or engaged in the fields of Enterprise Architecture, Strategy and IT and business transformation.
My background and experience as a conductor of both choirs and orchestras both amateur and professional gives me a unique insight into coordination of resources and the management of expectations.
